5 Period-Inspired Halloween Costumes For Procrastinators

Halloween is less than a week away. Have you got your costume together yet? If you're in the same boat as me - a costume enthusiast & chronic procrastinator - you likely do not have it together (both costume and otherwise.) You don't want to be caught costume-less on the spookiest night of the year. We've got some ideas for you, inspired by, what else? Periods!

These easy DIYs can be pulled together at the last minute with minimal effort. Most of the costumes on this list can be accomplished with just a quick trip to the thrift store, a little ingenuity, and copious amounts of fake blood. Happy Haunting!

At the top of everyone's period-adjacent costume list is, of course, the eponymous character from Brian DePalma's 1976 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, Carrie. Right from the opening scene, periods feature prominently in this vintage horror feature. In fact I've been known to coach friends through their first DivaCup insertion by chanting "Plug it up! Plug it up!" from the other side of the bathroom door.

Required Materials:

  • Pale Pink Slip Dress
  • Wrist corsage
  • A gallon of fake blood
  • A look of sheer horror and bewilderment

The Twins From The Shining

Name a spookier duo...I'll wait. While menstruation isn't referenced specifically in The Shining, it's the film that spawned everyone's favorite heavy flow gif, so we'd be remiss if we didn't include an homage to this creeptastic classic. Grab your bestie and get crackin' on this couples look.

What you'll need:

  • Blue dresses
  • White knee socks
  • Mary-janes
  • A giant elevator filled with blood

Shark Week

Here's a super fun group costume that you can bang out in an evening. I would take this in a menstrual direction by adding some strategically placed blood stains, and carrying around a hot water bottle. Invite your crew over, heat up your glue gun and cook up this look!

Supply List:

  • Grey T shirts
  • Iron-on letters or a Sharpie to write the days of the week
  • Grey, red and white craft felt for fashioning some Sharky Chapeaus

Move that bloody little buddy about 6 inches lower and you'll have a pretty close approximation of what my menstrual cramps feel like. Ugh.

Here's what you'll need to achieve the look:

  • Badass buzzcut
  • Army green tank top and zip up hoodie
  • Tons o' fake blood
  • A tube sock with vampire teeth glued to the end (The talented creator pictured above used a pair of old pantyhose to make their Chestburster, which I'm like "Wut? How even?!")

It's bloody! It's boozey! It pretty much looks like a full menstrual cup with a celery garnish!

  • red fabric
  • a hula hoop
  • garnish of your choice
